There are new aftermarket heads around that are priced cheap enough. A 248 ( M block ) can have " thin wall " sleeves installed which makes it into a 264. A 264 ( super M , 400 block ) can have " thin wall " sleeves installed which makes it a 281. A 248 ( M block ) could be bored up to the parent bore diameter of the 264 block and then putting in thin wall sleeves it would be stepped up a 281.Most likely, the original head was an 8060 head. Some Sm's and MTA's had 8574 heads. Both heads will give you a smooth running tractor giving you 45 hp. Stay away from the 8704 head which is the distillate head.
